How Do I Get Right With God? | Todd Coconato Radio Show

In order to get “right” with God, we must first understand what is “wrong.” The answer is sin. “There is no one who does good, not even one” (Psalm 14:3). We have rebelled against God’s commands; we “like sheep, have gone astray” (Isaiah 53:6).
The bad news is that the penalty for sin is death. “The soul who sins is the one who will die” (Ezekiel 18:4). The good news is that a loving God has pursued us in order to bring us salvation. Jesus declared His purpose was “to seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10), and He pronounced His purpose accomplished when He died on the cross with the words, “It is finished!” (John 19:30).
Having a right relationship with God begins with acknowledging your sin. Next comes a humble confession of your sin to God (Isaiah 57:15). “For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved” (Romans 10:10).
This repentance must be accompanied by faith – specifically, faith that Jesus’ sacrificial death and miraculous resurrection qualify Him to be your Savior. “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Many other passages speak of the necessity of faith, such as John 20:27; Acts 16:31; Galatians 2:16; 3:11, 26; and Ephesians 2:8.
Being right with God is a matter of your response to what God has done on your behalf. He sent the Savior, He provided the sacrifice to take away your sin (John 1:29), and He offers you the promise: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Acts 2:21).
A beautiful illustration of repentance and forgiveness is the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32). The younger son wasted his father’s gift in shameful sin (verse 13). When he acknowledged his wrongdoing, he decided to return home (verse 18). He assumed he would no longer be considered a son (verse 19), but he was wrong. The father loved the returned rebel as much as ever (verse 20). All was forgiven, and a celebration ensued (verse 24). God is good to keep His promises, including the promise to forgive. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).
If you want to get right with God, here is a sample prayer. Remember, saying this prayer or any other prayer will not save you. It is only trusting in Christ that can save you from sin. This prayer is simply a way to express to God your faith in Him and thank Him for providing for your salvation. "God, I know that I have sinned against You and am deserving of punishment. But Jesus Christ took the punishment that I deserve so that through faith in Him I could be forgiven. I place my trust in You for salvation. Thank You for Your wonderful grace and forgiveness – the gift of eternal life! Amen!"

New Book: www.PastorToddBook.com
Here is what I believe we need to do in this season. I am taking my own advice here.
1. Consecrate ourselves. Search our hearts and ask the Lord (His Holy Spirit) if there are any areas we need to change in our lives and repent of.
2. Stop allowing distractions to consume us. We can’t run to people to get daily words. We need to hear from God ourselves and seek His face. We must have an active prayer life. “My sheep hear my voice”.
3. Humble ourselves. The pride in the church has gotten out of control. When/if we consecrate, it should immediately humble us as we get rid of unnecessary flesh, vein imaginations, and ungodly desires.
4. Stop comparing. Each of our callings are different and unique. Seek to please God. Do what is right in His eyes and walk worthy of the calling. This will grant His favor and anointing.
5. Stop making idols. There should not be any “jockeying” or desire to be part of a “cool crowd”. We can definitely have mentors, elders, friends, key alignments, and people we look up to in the ministry, but this doesn’t mean we pledge our allegiance to men over God.
6. Get away from sin. Come out from among the world (Babylon) system and live in a way that is set apart and reflects our faith. Raise our children in the ways of the Lord and teach them His Word. Close open doors.
7. Know the Bible. This is the roadmap. Hide it in your heart. This is how we get our faith.
8. Make disciples. Be about the great commission. Be a soul winner. This is the main thing.
9. Do what is right. Don’t fleece the Saints, don’t sell gimmicks and marketing strategies. Be real. Be authentic.
10. Repent. Live a lifestyle of repentance. Be a person who is after Gods heart.
11. Be a “pure-stream”. Stop trying to fit in with others who are not in the same mindset. God is looking for people who are willing to get rid of the “leaven”. What fellowship does light have with darkness?
12. Don’t compromise. We will never have to compromise to get to our calling.
13. Cry out to God. Pray for this nation and the church. Get involved when God says to do so. Be active in the community. Faith without works (action) is dead. Christian’s need to occupy and go out. We can’t leave vacuums in areas like politics and others where the church historically hasn’t been engaged.
14. Go deeper. Get on fire for God. Stay on fire for God.
15. Get out of the rat race. It’s unhealthy and won’t get you anywhere anyways. It will only cause unneeded stress and warfare.

“Come Out from Among Them: Living a Separate Life For Jesus Christ”
Today we talk about the call to come out from among them and lead a separate life in Christ.
In a world filled with temptations and distractions, the Bible provides us with clear guidance on how to remain faithful to our Lord. Let us turn to the Scriptures for wisdom and understanding.
I. The Biblical Foundation for SeparationA. 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (NIV)"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?"
This passage underscores the importance of not aligning ourselves too closely with unbelievers. It's not about avoiding them entirely but ensuring that our primary influences are godly.
II. Examples of Separation in the BibleA. Abraham (Genesis 12:1-4)- God called Abraham to leave his homeland and separate from his family to follow God's plan.
B. Daniel (Daniel 1:8)- Daniel and his friends refused to defile themselves with the king's food, demonstrating their commitment to God's principles.
These biblical examples show us that separation is not isolation, but a conscious choice to prioritize our relationship with God above all else.
III. Practical Steps for SeparationA. Guarding Our Hearts (Proverbs 4:23)- We must be diligent in protecting our hearts from worldly influences that can lead us away from God.
B. Choosing Our Associations Wisely (1 Corinthians 15:33)- We should be mindful of our friendships and relationships, ensuring they align with our Christian values.
C. Pursuing Holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16)- God calls us to be holy, which means living a life set apart for His purposes.
Living a separated life involves daily choices that reflect our commitment to Christ.
IV. The Promise of God's PresenceA. Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you."
As we come out from among them and draw near to God, He promises to be with us, guiding and protecting us in our journey of faith.
The call to come out from among them is a fundamental aspect of our Christian walk. It's about living a life that honors God, even in the midst of a world that often opposes His ways. Let us remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:16 (NIV): "In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
May we be inspired by the examples of separation in the Bible and take real steps to live a life set apart for God's glory!

In the Bible, there are instances where the devil or evil spirits attempt to imitate or counterfeit the work of God's Holy Spirit. Here are some examples with their full scriptural references and brief explanations:
1. **The Witch of Endor - 1 Samuel 28:3-25**:- **Scriptural Reference**: 1 Samuel 28:3-25- **Commentary**: Saul consulted a medium, the witch of Endor, in an attempt to contact the spirit of Samuel, a prophet of God who had died. This act involved necromancy and was contrary to God's commandments. The devil can deceive through practices that seem spiritual but are rooted in the occult.
2. **Simon the Sorcerer - Acts 8:9-24**:- **Scriptural Reference**: Acts 8:9-24- **Commentary**: Simon, a magician, was amazed by the miracles performed by the apostles and wanted to buy the ability to bestow the Holy Spirit by laying on of hands. Peter rebuked him for trying to purchase spiritual gifts, showing that the devil can corrupt spiritual experiences for personal gain.
3. **The Seven Sons of Sceva - Acts 19:13-16**:- **Scriptural Reference**: Acts 19:13-16- **Commentary**: These Jewish exorcists attempted to cast out demons using the name of Jesus, whom they didn't personally believe in. The possessed man overpowered them, demonstrating that invoking the name of Jesus without genuine faith can be ineffective and even dangerous.
4. **False Prophets and False Signs - Matthew 24:24**:- **Scriptural Reference**: Matthew 24:24- **Commentary**: Jesus warned about false prophets and false Christs who would perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. This highlights the deceptive nature of counterfeit spiritual experiences.
5. **The Temptation of Jesus - Matthew 4:1-11**:- **Scriptural Reference**: Matthew 4:1-11- **Commentary**: Satan tempted Jesus by quoting Scripture and offering worldly power. However, Jesus discerned the deception and countered with the truth of God's Word. This illustrates how the devil can twist Scripture and offer false promises to mislead.
These examples serve as warnings against deception and the misuse of spiritual experiences. They emphasize the importance of discernment, a deep understanding of God's Word, and a genuine relationship with the Holy Spirit to avoid falling prey to counterfeit spiritual influences.
There are numerous instances in the Bible where the Spirit of the Lord was poured out, empowering individuals or groups for various purposes. Here are some examples with their scriptural references and brief commentary:
1. **Pentecost - Acts 2:1-4**:- **Scriptural Reference**: Acts 2:1-4- **Commentary**: On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles in the form of tongues of fire, enabling them to speak in languages they didn't know. This event marked the birth of the Christian Church and demonstrated the power and presence of the Holy Spirit in equipping believers for evangelism.
2. **Anointing of David - 1 Samuel 16:13**:- **Scriptural Reference**: 1 Samuel 16:13- **Commentary**: Samuel anointed David with oil, and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him. This anointing prepared David for his future role as king of Israel, illustrating how the Spirit empowers individuals for specific purposes.
3. **Ezekiel's Vision of Dry Bones - Ezekiel 37:1-14**:- **Scriptural Reference**: Ezekiel 37:1-14- **Commentary**: In this vision, the Spirit of the Lord brought life to dry, dead bones, symbolizing God's power to restore Israel. It illustrates how the Holy Spirit can revive and renew spiritually dead situations.
4. **The Baptism of Jesus - Matthew 3:16-17**:- **Scriptural Reference**: Matthew 3:16-17- **Commentary**: When Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in the form of a dove, and the Father's voice affirmed His divine Sonship. This event marked the beginning of Jesus' earthly ministry and highlighted the role of the Holy Spirit in empowering Him.
5. **The Day of Atonement - Leviticus 16:12-13**:- **Scriptural Reference**: Leviticus 16:12-13- **Commentary**: On the Day of Atonement, the high priest entered the Holy of Holies with incense, representing the prayers of the people, and the Spirit of the Lord manifested in the cloud. This symbolized God's presence and forgiveness, emphasizing the importance of ritual purity.
The Bible emphasizes various principles and virtues for pleasing the Lord and fostering an environment where the Holy Spirit can work. While interpretations may vary among denominations and individuals, some key ingredients include:
1. **Faith**: Believing in God and trusting in His plan is foundational.
2. **Love**: Loving God and one's neighbors is a central commandment.
3. **Repentance**: Turning away from sin and seeking forgiveness is essential.
4. **Obedience**: Following God's commandments and teachings is important.
5. **Prayer**: Regular communication with God through prayer deepens the relationship.
6. **Worship**: Praising and honoring God through worship services and personal devotion.
7. **Fruit of the Spirit**: Cultivating qualities like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, as mentioned in Galatians 5:22-23.
8. **Humility**: Recognizing one's need for God and not exalting oneself.
9. **Service**: Serving others in love and humility, as exemplified by Jesus.
10. **Community**: Being part of a Christian community for support, accountability, and growth.
11. **Scripture**: Studying and meditating on the Bible for guidance and wisdom.
12. **Sacrifice**: Willingness to make personal sacrifices for God and others.
